I think one of the worst books I've read recently--if giving up halfway through counts as 'read'--was Sebastian Faulks' Birdsong. The central character was such a shit I didn't care about him and I certainly wasn't going to follow his 'suffering' during WWI as it would only have felt deserved.... The book btw was recommended to me by Random Bloke in the Pub as the best book he'd ever read.
